End of life for the classic CMSimple or what?

Post by bjorn » Mon Jun 10, 2013 2:49 pm

I have some doubts about the future of CMSimple Classic. It is missing updated plugins and templates. The only good thing is that CMSimple Classic is small and simple. And it works out of the box with very little ajustments. Almost any newbie can use it with very little instruction.

But CMSimple_XH is clerly much better and much more up to date. And Christoph has proved that it is possible to cut CMSimple_XH down to a light version. Perhaps the editor should be whizzywig in stead of whizzywing.

With a nice template and a small editor CMSimple_LXH or whatever it should be called could be perfect for small web sites. But will the team behind CMSimple_XH make such a version?

Best regards
Björn

Hi Björn,

I guess it wouldn't be necessary to make a special version. All one has to do is remove unwanted plugins and replace the editor with a lightweight one. There may be made a "packager" available (an improved variant of http://3-magi.net/packager/), which allows users to select their prefered components.

About the editor: I've chosen Whizzywing, because it's the successor of Whizzywig. It has a much cleaner codebase and uses contentEditable instead of an IFrame. Unfortunately the user interface is IMO worse than Whizzywig's, but at least it's very compact. I had hoped that Whizzywing will be developed further, but it doesn't seem so (https://github.com/unverse/Whizzywing/commits/master; last commit from January 2012). It seems all the lightweight editors are fading away...

However, I shall have a look at making a simple and lightweight editor available as plugin.

Hi Christoph

Thanks for the answer.

You are right Whizzywing is ok, but the user interface could be nicer. Perhaps I shoud try if I can change it so it looks like a more traditional editor.

I will try to strip down the newest version of CMSimple_XH and test it as a replacement for old versions of CMSimple.

What should should the name be CMSimple_LXH and same version number ??

Have a nice day
Björn

Hi Björn,

You may want to check out http://whizzywing.com/Tailored-Toolbar-Demo. I assume its not hard to add buttons for headings, lists etc. instead of using the block select box.

One problem remains, though: the UTF-8 charset. Since CMSimple_XH 1.5 it's absolutely mandatory to use UTF-8. Upgrading old installations requires to convert several files to UTF-8, and that may change existing URLs (see http://www.cmsimple-xh.org/wiki/doku.ph ... d_versions for details and a workaround). Since a while I'm testing a new plugin "Moved" on my server, which allows to redirect URLs, try e.g. http://3-magi.net/?CMSimple_XH/CodeEditor_XH and you'll end up on http://3-magi.net/?CMSimple_XH/Codeeditor_XH (note the different case). This is done with PHP only (no mod_rewrite or similar needed for maximum portability), and it may be used to redirect old ANSI URLs to new UTF-8 ones.

There are no restrictions on the name (besides those on http://cmsimple.org/en/?Terms_of_use). Keeping the version number in sync, seems to be a good idea, if the core will not be modified (or only slightly).

I have updated CMSimple Classic to version 3.53 to get a little more time to see how much I can make CMSimple_XH to look like the classic CMSimple ;-)

Whenever I start writing about major changes of CMSimple Classic some good people ask me to continue, because it is so noce and simple compared to the more modern versions. It is nice, that it still satisfies a need. But I also feel it is a problem that it is falling behind with templates and plugins.

Anyway. I have given it a little longer time.

Thanks to Christoph who always give me a lot of very useful advices.

Bjorn
