While testing I noticed that the form's method is "post" -- you may consider changing this to "get"

That's interesting, because the searchbox didn't work as expected on the demo with same template as on cmsimple-xh.org.

Clicking on the looking glass with empty search field resulted in XH returning the index page and on the bottom the search result. Strange. But when I changed "post" to "get", the normal behavior was there again.

Indeed. That is most likely caused by Templateswitch, and apparently is related to the unreliable $s.
