But I'm not quite sure, if I understand correctly: is it possible for everybody to upload as many jpegs, zips and pdfs as he likes to your server?

To protect complete folders an .htaccess might be the savest choice, but that won't work on IIS (I'm not sure about other webservers besides Apache, e.g. NGINX). ...
